Local Artist Sue Branch gave a talk about oil techniques and materials. For those with little or no experience of the medium, contemporary oil painter Sue Branch offered an informative and stimulating introduction to oil painting. The talk included an introduction to the art of oil painting and its history, with guidance on sources of information and inspiration. Materials were explored, including advice on paint brands, brushes, mediums and solvents. Having explained the basic principles of colours, pigment codes and things like temperature and value, Sue introduced some of the disciplines that can be employed when using oils; techniques like Ebuache, Dark to Light and Translucent to Opaque. Sue also included an introduction to how Gesso can be used as a ground or preparatory layer for painting. The talk was followed by a lively Q&A after which Sue joined her audience members for an informal chat over coffee and cake.
